YOU NEED SKILLS MORE THAN TALENT
Calum tried out all kinds of lessons as a child. He was pretty good in Gymnastics; pretty mediocre in Karate; very good in Singing; okay in Dance; pretty good in Acting and exceptional in Piano.
He started piano lessons when he was 4 and won the Canadian National Young Composers award when he was just 11. He loved to play the piano and clearly had exceptional talent.
BUT, and here is the critical BUT - Piano wasn’t his true passion. Acting was his true passion. He would give up any and everything for the chance to take a class or be in a show or go to an audition. He saw himself as an actor – even if at first the rest of the world didn’t, and he never wavered in that belief.
From the very beginning, I made sure he clearly understood what it was going to take. I didn’t sugar coat it, but I also didn’t ever discourage him.
Child actors grow up, and when cuteness no longer matters, they had better have the chops to compete with the best on the continent for every role.“

CONFIDENCE IS A SKILL
Avan is enormously confident and had an easy relationship with auditions (and nearly everyone he’s ever met). I talked to his mum, Wendy, about his confidence (something we nourish in The Creativity Sessions) and she had this to say:
Avan always seemed to have an emotional knowledge beyond his years. He is incredibly confident and has a highly developed sense of humour. These are the attributes that could serve you well in a job where you mostly get rejection.
I felt it important not to sugarcoat the industry and let him know what the expectation of him would be. I knew from friends how things worked on set and how important it was to come prepared and be professional.
I felt it very important that he understood what he was giving up, that this was work, it wasn’t playtime but it could be a lot of fun. And if ever it wasn’t fun anymore it was his choice to stop.

Just as I was creating this class I got a wonderful message from Daphne Hoskins mother, Carrie.
When working with KC my daughter, Daphne Hoskins, learned to set goals for herself.
Her bucket list goal, the one she thought was a crazy long shot was to work with someone from HARRY POTTER.
Like all the other goals she set with KC this one too came true. She was so overwhelmed she burst into tears when she first met him.
There is no way to describe the pure joy of watching your daughter's dreams come true.

LEARN TO DEAL WITH INCREDIBLE SUCCESS
I chose these photos of Madeleine Arthur for a reason. One of her first bookings was BIG EYES directed by Tim Burton. Some nasty people said Madeleine got the role simply because she had big eyes. She was one of thousands of big eyed actors who auditioned. She booked because of what's behind her beautiful eyes. The depth of her soul is reflected in the work she did on Devil In Ohio (her 2nd number 1 Netflix show in the world)
Jane Walter, the mother of my client, Madeleine Arthur, has had a trial by fire experience. Madeleine had enormous success very quickly. Here's what Jane had to say about the experience.
"Life is always a roller coaster in this business!
Madeleine was in her graduating year of high school when she filmed a pilot in Vancouver.
Once the pilot was made we waited to see if it would be picked up (waiting is a big part of acting). Three months later the network picked up the pilot for the season.
Yay! We were really fortunate and we were off to New York City! We had six weeks to secure our own accommodation for filming there. No easy task in the middle of August. Relatively speaking though, the month we had to prepare for our adventure is oodles of time in this industry.
There were lots of things to arrange; work, activities, schedules, etc. had to be rearranged or canceled. From a parent's standpoint, it is not only a commitment for your child but a big commitment for their family. Everyone has to be on board to make a move work with a young actor. In our case, our family and friends were more than on board and we had visitors for the entire time!
My daughter and I met and worked with some amazing people. We spent six magical months in one of the most wonderful cities in the world. This opportunity offered an incredible period of growth for Madeleine not only as an actress but also as a young lady.
I can only say in this industry expect nothing and when it becomes something... embrace it!"
