Dr. Evan Adams and I are incredibly proud to announce a scholarship for Indigenous Actors. Please read to learn more!

Here's the story of why we're offering this incredible scholarship.

Growing up I thought my Uncle Dick and my Aunt Margaret were the King and Queen of Hazelton.

"Auntie Margaret (holding my brother), Uncle Dick, and me."

I later learned that there were people who didn't feel the same as me. They didn't like my Uncle Dick because he was Indigenous and they didn't like my Aunt Margaret because she was white and she married an Indigenous man.

That devastated me and it also started me on a journey to fight racism wherever I see it. Particularly with Indigenous people.

I work in film and TV. It has always bothered me that the only time you see an Indigenous person on screen is when they are playing an "Indian." Often a stereotype.

When Smoke Signals came out in 1998, it reflected the world I knew.  In 2020 Smoke Signals was added to the prestigious AFI Movie Club!

I fell in love with Smoke Signals and I particularly fell in love with the wide smile of Thomas Builds-The-Fire played by Dr. Evan Adams. I loved that he was nerdy and optimistic and that he was unlike the stereotype I saw on the rare occasions you saw "Indians on TV."

It was Thomas who said,  "The only thing more pathetic than Indians on TV is Indians watching Indians on TV." That got a huge laugh from the audience!

A few years back, by complete fluke, I moved to the tiny town where Dr. EvanAdams lives and I became his acting coach and  friend.

We are working on several projects together but THE EVANADAMS SCHOLARSHIP FOR INDIGENOUS ACTORS is very dear to both of us because... we're sick of racism and we want to be able to help indigenous artists get a break.

The odds have been stacked against Indigenous artists for too long.

This is a small way to help even the playing field. Please take advantage of it.

This scholarship is for Indigenous artists only.
